Yesterday afternoon the ship stopped briefly to take a seawater sample for one of the science projects onboard and the continuous plankton recorder was deployed shortly afterwards. Scientists can often be seen in the ship’s laboratories now checking on samples or working on reports as a result of their work on the continent. Yesterday afternoon we passed many large bergs, some with spectacular arches and buttresses. Today however the ice is gone, replaced by the southern ocean swell. The diversity of the seabirds observed has increased and a white southern giant petrel was seen yesterday. This morning we passed through thick fog and some early risers caught sight of a pod of orcas.
