Comments

Yesterday we discovered that some of the fresh food that came ashore was accidentally frozen. This is our biggest setback to date but some of the damaged food is recoverable and it was only a small proportion of the overall volume of food delivered. The damaged food should be able to be replaced by Voyage 4. Otherwise cargo operations are going well with large volumes of containerised cargo being delivered ashore and cargo that is to return to Australia coming out to the ship. Four Adelie penguins are sitting on a floe near the ship quizzically watching the two barges go back and forth with loads of cargo. The barge drivers have the longest day of anyone and have done a great job here at Casey moving cargo and people. Last night they took a water tank to get pristine sea water for the science aquarium on station. The ship’s crane was having problems with a cooling fan but in a feat of improvisation the engineers developed a temporary solution with a domestic fan to keep things moving along. We plan to continue cargo operations tomorrow and we expect that they will go for most of the day. Whether we are ready to depart Casey tomorrow night is still up in the air and will depend on how we go this afternoon and tomorrow.
