Iceberg! Our first berg was sighted a little before nine o’clock ship’s time this morning. Quite a good specimen for one this far north. The iceberg spotting sweepstake didn’t even have a time slot for this early in the voyage but the officer of the watch judged that it was smaller than the ship so didn’t count. His call was morally correct but technically marginal as it about as long as the ship, with sharply pointed towers. It looked like an isolated fort guarding the road to Antarctica. The quiz night last night was a big hit with quite a bit of money pledged to Camp Quality. The Deputy Voyage Leader’s team won but one can assume that their perfect score in the music round was due more to an underhand donation than an extensive knowledge of the chart toppers. Good sailing conditions today and we will hopefully avoid the worst of the low pressure system we are due to encounter tomorrow. The satellite ice pictures show that the ice on the approaches to Davis is breaking out. We still to be at Davis within a day of our last estimate.
