Comments

Weather improved yesterday afternoon to the point where we could get two helicopters in the air for an ice recon flight. This gave us a good idea of open water areas to head for during the evening. Weather today is less friendly for flying (in fact downright unfriendly) so we're now relying on our satellite data (radar derived ice concentration best-guesstimates)to feel our way through. Still heading for open water areas north of Cape Darnley, with the hint of an easier route through to the west from there. Slow going now. Not much to see outside in the whiteout... Although having just typed that I looked out the window to check on the ice and saw a Minke whale surface beside the ship. Looks promising for more open water ahead... REGARDS Doug and Nicki
