Since last report proceeded to position 64.15S 109.30E where ship stopped to undertake first ice reconnaissance flight. Helicopter airborne at 1645 and returned to ship ship at 1725 local time. Reconnaissance indicated leads ahead but large floe to navigate through or around. Ship proceeded to position 64.29.9S 109.19.3E were we encountered nine tenths first year ice of close pack with snow on floes. After several attempts to find a passage through we turned back and hove to against large floe at position 64.23S 109.15E and shut down for the night at 2330LT. Ship underway at 0530LT and at 0815LT hove to at position 64.27S 109.23E to undertake second reconnaissance flight with aircraft airborne at 0947LT. Reconnaissance detected promising leads and ship underway again at 1100LT. Hoping to reach fly-off range at 1300LT and commence flying off first pax and cargo weather permitting. All on board well and the Camp Quality fund raiser held last evening was very successful with many willing volunteers.
