Comments

Weather eased overnight. Attempts to break ice towards Mawson so far today have proved to be unproductive despite 36 hours of 50-60 knot winds and the ship's full 11,500 KW on line. All the fast ice west of the Rookery Islands has blown out right to the coast, however, the area north of Mawson where the surveyed route is is still there and is very very tough. Our advance has been limited to only 80 m on each forward thrust. Have tried to push south in a number of locations to the north and west of the ice that remains but to no avail. Currently reviewing what options we have left. Happy 'Oz' Day!
