Comments

Winds of 25 to 35 knots throughout the day prevented an attempt to enter the harbour to break the ice. Made many transects in and around the harbour entrance and in Kista strait which has resulted in large area of open water immediately outside the harbour. At 2045 winds began to drop and the ship's boat was put over the side and deployed to move ice in the harbour entrance. As the wind continued to drop the ship entered the harbour and broke ice for around one hour. The ship withdrew and stopped for the night in Kista strait in 20 to 30 cm fast ice. Ice in harbour ranged in thickness from 10 to 50 cm. At the time of reporting wind is blowing SE 20 to 30 knots which is preventing any further ice breaking in harbour. Last nights ice breaking improved the situation but still considerable ice in the harbour. Awaiting wind change to make further ice breaking attempt in the harbour. All passengers in good spirits and waiting with expectation to get ashore. REGARDS Richard and Jenny
