ULS 2 retrieved in the midst of ice; attempts to reach AIS3 thwarted due to heavy pack ice; retreated to the north west, then south along ice edge to fly-off range 50 miles from Sansom Island. Two Squirrel helicopters reached the vessel yesterday afternoon plus members of Beaver Lake and AMISOR field parties but conditions unsuitable for additional flights. Pods of killer whales sighted at the ice edge this morning attacking a minke whale; good observations recorded. Commenced Sansom Island operations to retrieve equipment and waste from past two field seasons. Hoping for suitable weather on the AIS to re-position AMISOR AWS and other tasks later in the day; forecast is good. Intentions: moor in ice edge for heli ops; krill net tonight; considering options for further assault on AIS3.
