Aurora broke out into the relative open water in Prydz Bay at 0300 this morning, into soft early morning sunshine, blue water and icebergs, with PolarB close stern, The ice in Prydz Bay held on to PolarB at every opportunity making the track out to the ice edge a struggle all the way, punctuated with broken tow ropes, frequent jamming and back tracking. At one stage we came close to cutting off her anchor and using the chain as a tow line. Helicopters invaluable, guiding Aurora around each individual piece of pack, one ship length at a time. All onboard well. No accidents, no injuries. Our 2 vessels joined the Xue Long mid ocean early this morning. Pax transfers this morning - 4 from Davis to AA, 1 AA back to Davis, and 1 AA back to PolarB. Now escorting PolarB to the north, to at least 62S, well clear of any ice, before we head separately back to Hobart. We may head as far north as 58S, hoping to pick up the tail behind a front and surf home to Hobart.
