Australian Antarctic Program projects – ensure that you have project approval and approval from the Australian Antarctic Program Animal Ethics Committee if required.

Permits for Antarctic activities can be applied for using the environmental approvals application form [Word] (also available from the Territories, Environment and Treaties Section, AAD, by emailing eia@aad.gov.au, or phoning +61 3 6232 3209). Applications must be submitted no less than two months prior to departure to the Antarctic.

Macquarie Island permit enquiries should be directed to the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service. Contact details are available by emailing Macquarie.Island@parks.tas.gov.au.

Tourist and non-government expeditions are required to give advance notice of their intention to visit Antarctica no later than 1 September each year. This notice is required to be given in accordance with Australia’s obligations under the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol to provide advance information on Australian activities in Antarctica.
