Remediating fuel spills in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic

Human activity in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic has left a legacy of contaminated sites, either through past practices or accidental contaminant release. The continued use of fossil fuels around Antarctic stations brings with it the risk of fuel spills occurring. In recent years, the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) has elevated the repair and remediation of contaminated sites in Antarctica to the highest priority. Through a program of remediation research and application of remediation technologies, the AAD is addressing it’s legacy sites and more recent spill events. Contaminated sites are now being remediated to the point where they pose a greatly reduced environmental risk and formerly contaminated soil is potentially available for reuse.
