International applicants

In addition to the information in the guidelines about international applicants, the following agreement is in place between the Australian Antarctic Division and Antarctica New Zealand to facilitate enhanced scientific cooperation between our programs.

To achieve this Australian Antarctic Division and Antarctica New Zealand will:

  • hold a joint Antarctic science conference every three years (first joint conference to occur in 2012 in Australia)
  • share information on strategic direction to identify science areas where programs may work more closely offer logistics support for joint1 Australian Antarctic Program/Antarctica New Zealand  research or environmental programs. This support will be offered on the following basis:
    • each program accepts the other's recommendation as to scientific or environmental merit (researchers won't be required to submit proposals to both programs)
    • mutual recognition of each country's medical assessments
    • trans-Tasman costs and any associated travel and accommodation expenses to be met by the country with whom the participant is normally associated
    • proposals for support under these arrangements to be forwarded to the other program by 1 April each year for assessment of support in 18 month's time
  • Antarctica New Zealand will work with the Australian Antarctic Division to develop a national Antarctic data strategy.

1Joint environmental or research projects are those that involve collaboration between investigators from each country.

To be considered under this arrangement projects require investigators from a New Zealand and an Australian research institution.
