Hot water drilling on the Amery Ice Shelf - an overview of the 2009-2010 AMISOR field season

The Amery Ice Shelf Ocean Research (AMISOR) project is a large multi- disciplinary program designed to further our understanding of ocean-Amery Ice Shelf interactions and the influence of these processes on grounded continental ice. The AMISOR program continued during the 2009-2010 field season with two boreholes drilled: one to the north- east of Jetty Peninsula and a second north-west of Gillock Island. Shavawn and Adam give a brief introduction to the science behind the AMISOR project and a pictorial overview of the 2009-2010 field season.

Unveiling the Antarctic subglacial landscape – Roland Warner and Jason Roberts

Better knowledge of the subglacial landscape of Antarctica is a key to improving predictions about the future of the ice sheet. Big survey projects like ICECAP and AGAP improve the situation, but the vast size of Antarctica means that ice thickness data remains patchy. We have developed a new interpolation scheme to fill in the gaps, and are using to generate a comprehensive map of Antarctic bedrock topography. A good picture is emerging and this talk is a brief summary of our progress.

Penguin cams: new technology for broad-scale, cost-effective monitoring

Monitoring at large scales and over the long term in Antarctica is extremely expensive. Automated, remotely operating observation platforms are essential if we are to maintain monitoring over the long term and achieve the level of spatial replication needed to distinguish between local and regional-scale impacts. We have developed and tested a camera system that can operate continuously at remote sites in Antarctica. This talk will briefly describe the camera's features and how the system is currently being used to monitor penguin populations.
