Handovers complete, the 77th ANARE take the helm at Mawson research station.

First week for the crew at Mawson station

As the title suggests, an Antarctic station is a bit like being on a ship. Each one an island in a sea of ice, snow and rock separated by thousands of kilometres. This is more noticeable when the ship leaves and you and the rest of the crew are it for the next year.

This week we finished refuelling the stations tanks from the RSV Nuyina. As the ship, crew and outgoing 76th ANARE sailed smoothly out of Kista Strait into the night, we farewelled them in the traditional way with our expired flares lighting up the sky like fireworks.

The next few days were spent relaxing and settling into station. We could do little else as high winds gusting up to 89 knots kept us in the Red shed unless required to go out along bliz lines to keep the generators running.
