Nanching recaps on their experience as Station Supply Officer for the 76th Macquarie Island

End of a chapter: Station Supply Officer at Macca 76th

My role as a Station Supply Officer at Macca is coming to an end, but the workload has piled on much more towards the end of the season than during.  Lots of preparation and following up which all leads towards one last voyage that will take us all home.  There's been lots of never-ending twists and turns to get there!

Some of the highlights of the season have been:

  • Being able to cook for the station on some occasions was a lot of fun.  My latest venture has been experimenting with cookies,
  • Learning lots from the trades and how things work (still don't understand how things work),
  • Learned to drive a tractor (bogged it),
  • Learned to drive a polaris (bogged it),
  • Beautiful island, boggy terrain up the escarpment, plentiful wildlife and relaxing huts.

With the final two months or so being preparation for resupply and the changeover of staff, passing the torch to the next crew who will have fresh perspectives and new ideas, we're hoping for a smooth transition.  For the Green Store, its cleaning out old legacy gear, and clearing the shelves as they will be stocked to the brim once resupply hits!

One of the hobbies taken across the year was photography and some of my favourite shots are here (even if I've shared them before!).  Lots of animals and lots of boggy nature!

Quite the adventure of a place to be, Macquarie Island many memories that will carry on and the intriguing nature of all of these animals and how many there are. Hope to see them again one day.
