BOM science on Macca

Have you ever wondered why there are three people from BoM that get to winter every year at Macca?  No?  Me neither but I'm going to tell you.

Science!  No really, technically, it's for science.

Here is a list of programs that we get to support.  Some directly for the weather bureau and others for our friends with other organisations.  Some are hands-on and others just require that we keep an eye on automated equipment.

  • BoMWeather Observations (manual and auto) of various temperatures, humidity, wind speed/direction, rainfall/snowfall, sunshine and barometric pressure.
  • BoM Upper Air Program – daily weather balloons and radiosondes.
  • BoM Ozone – manual (Dobson) and auto (Brewer) ozone measurements and weekly balloon and sonde releases.
  • BoM SWS (Space Weather Services) – riometer and GNSS/TEC instruments.
  • NIWA (New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) – auto UV and visibility monitoring.
  • CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) – auto (Piccaro) and manual (Sherpa) atmospheric sampling for GASLab (Global Atmospheric Sampling Laboratory) climate change monitoring.
  • ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) – auto atmospheric radon monitoring and manual rainfall sample collection.
  • SAEF (Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future) – manual aerosol sample collection.
