My ICT (Icy-Tea) Retrospective

My ICT (Icy-Tea) Retrospective

Embarking on the awe-inspiring vessel Nuyina, we set sail for Antarctica, where we experienced firsthand its remarkable ice-breaking capabilities during trials. Throughout the voyage, our days were filled with the sky's abundance of skua, snow petrel, cape petrels, Antarctic fulmar, and Wilson’s storm petrel, while the ice below welcomed visits from emperor and Adelie penguins, amidst icebergs, pancake ice and seals, including crab eaters and leopard seals. Witnessing pods of orcas and minke whales in their natural habitat was truly unforgettable.

Onboard, enlightening talks were given, sharing personal adventures and shedding light on Antarctic projects and the dedicated teams of the Australian Antarctic Division. These insights underscored the significance of their contribution to our understanding of this unique environment.

Arriving at Davis station, I located my room at SAM, where energy and laughter filled the halls and walls, setting the tone for engaging in survival training and venturing out to Brookes hut for drilling samples and an overnight stay. Returning via scenic routes including Deep Lake, Lake Stinear, Lake Dingle, Law Cairn, Watts Hut and Marine Plain Refuge, we navigated rocks, snow, and ice, passing by emperor and Adelie penguins, with skuas soaring overhead as constant companions.

This season, my goal was to surpass my achievements at Casey station, a goal I am pleased to have accomplished alongside my ICT team. As we bid farewell to Davis station, our completed project supporting satellite communications stands as a testament to our dedication and hard work, ensuring connectivity through the winter and beyond.

As we part ways, I am grateful for the connections made and look forward to the adventures that lie ahead. Here's to a great year ahead for all!
