Interview between Lena Fitler Davis Chef & Scotty Lewis,Winter Expeditioner & Dieso at Davis Station 23/24 Season.

Its 'business time' with Lena and Scotty at Davis Station

(L) “This is Lena Fittler for Station News, talking with Expeditioner sensation Scotty Lewis of Davis Station. How you doing Scotty?”

(S) “Great thanks Lena, I am super slushy today so having a ball!”

(L) “Fabulous to hear Scotty, we love to have you here with us in the kitchen. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions about the life and times of Scott Lewis?”

(S) “If you have to.”

(L) “I do Scott, I do! The people want to know!”

(S) “Fine!”

(L) “Alright then, let's get to it. What do you do down here at Davis station?”

(S) “I am a dieso. Just put mechanic.”

(L) “OK and what’s your favourite part about your job down here?”

(S) "Getting off station.”

(L) “That’s not part of your job Scotty, what’s your favourite part of your ACTUAL job down here?”

(S) “ Just fixing stuff then.”

(L) “What’s your favourite thing to fix?”

(S) “ Not the polaris … (laughter) probably the Haggs.”

(L) “Is your job much different down here than where you normally work? If so, why?”

(S) “ Everything takes a lot longer because of the cold and just trying to find stuff is a bit of a challenge.”

(L) “OK and what made you apply for a job in Antarctica of all places?”

(S)-“Deceptive marketing videos ( laughter)……(more laughter).”

(L) “No really, you can’t put that! What drew you here?”

(S) “I guess the adventure, it's something not many people get to do!”

(L) “I think that’s true for a lot of us that apply, great answer. You stumped me on the marketing comment. I forgot my next question.”

(Diabolical laughter)

(L) “What would you like to achieve in your season down here? You’re here for the winter yeah? What are your goals? It can be work goals, social, personal?”

(S) “This sounds a lot like my performance review Lena (laughter). I really want to get off station as much as possible, see all of the huts, keep the station running would be a plus I guess (laughter)”

(L) “It would be a plus, possibly a necessity if we’re really pushing.”

(Laughter)

(L) “What’s your favourite things so far about Antarctica?”

(S) “THE PENGUINS!!”

(L) “That’s a no brainer!! (laughter) Did you get much sleep on your survival training?”

(S) “Hell yeah, I slept like a log!”

(L) “What? How? What’s the secret to having a good night’s sleep in a bivvy bag during survival training?”

(S) “You jam your field bag up against the entranceof the bivvy so the bag doesn’t fall on your face when you’re trying to sleep and put your bivvy bag facing the wind so you get airflow through there so you don’t get condensation while you’re trying to sleep. THAT is the secret to a good night’s sleep on survival training!”

(L) “And did you have headphones or ear plugs or anything?”

(S) “Oh yeah I always sleep with an audiobook going.”

(L) “Oh yeah okay. So here is a random question from the people — who would win in a fight? A penguin or a skua? (a type of big bird down in Antarctica for those listening at home).”

(S) “A Skua OBVIOUSLY!”

(L) “Yeah, I agree. What do you miss most about home Scotty?”

(S) “ My boat.”

(L) “ Your boat? That’s right I heard you’re going sailing after this season. How long will you be sailing for?”

(S) “Probably ten years!”

(L) “TEN YEARS? Wow that’s a fair while, that will be an adventure in itself. What has been your most surprising moment of being down here so far?”

(S) “Most surprising – Davis station does NOT look like I expected Antarctica to look!  It looks more like a mining camp on the moon than an Antarctic station.”

(L) “Or an alien planet or some such conspiracy theory eh?”

(S) “Well yeah I found the wall.”

(laughter and laughter and more covert laughter)

(L) “What wall is that? The people want to know about the wall Scotty.”

(S) “You know the wall, we can’t talk about the wall because of the NDA we signed.”

(More laughter)

(L) “OK then moving on. If you were a character in a movie, would you be a hero or a villain?”

(S) “I’D BE A VILLAIN! Villain for sure!”

(L) “Is that because you’re a s@#T stirrer perhaps?

(Maniacal laughter)

(L) “Haha okay moving on, what’s your favourite smell?”

(S) “Ahh, that’s a tough one, probably the ocean. It’s one of my favourite places.”

(L) “Yeah same here. OK this might be a tricky question. If you had to give up one of these things, what would it be? Dessert? Alcohol? Or savoury snacks?”

(S)  "Savoury snacks, I have a wicked sweet tooth. I couldn’t live without my sweets.”

(L) “ Very interesting. Here is another tricky one thrown your way. If a genie gave you three wishes, what would they be?”

(S) "Hmmm. Well I would like to know every language on earth, be able to read, write and speak every language. I would like the ability to hack any device.”

(L) “Sounds like you’re a threat! You want to be a bloody spy!”

(Espionage laughter)

(S) “ANNNDDD I don’t want to age anymore.”

(L) “Nor do any of us. That’s a good one!”

(L) “OK and the last question before we let you get back to the dishwasher. You have been to Davis station, the people want to know, what’s the next step for Scott Lewis? Will you come back down if given a chance? What other station do you see yourself conquering?”

(S) “Well yeah I would love to come down every third season, that would tie in well and I think Mawson would be my next adventure.”

(L) “Nice. Any wise words you can leave your fans with?”

(S) “Don’t believe the marketing videos, it’s a little different!”

( awkward laughter)

(L) “So folks, that was straight from the mouth of Scott Lewis, expeditioner extraordinaire down here at Davis station. For now, this is Lena Fittler signing off. Stay Classy Davis Station.”
