Governor General visits Australian Antarctic Territory

The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), has visited the Australian Antarctic Territory, meeting expeditioners and scientists at Wilkins Aerodrome.

The Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove flew the 7000 kilometre round trip from Hobart to Australia’s ice runway on the Royal Australian Air Force Globemaster Boeing C-17A which is supporting the Australian Antarctic Program.

The visit included an overview of an Antarctic field camp, a briefing on aviation and cargo operations, and discussions with scientists and expeditioners undertaking research and logistical support work on the continent.

His Excellency is the second Australian Governor-General to visit Australian Antarctic Territory.
