The Australian Antarctic Magazine seeks to inform the Australian and international Antarctic community about the activities of the Australian Antarctic program. Opinions expressed in the magazine do not necessarily represent the position of the Australian Government.

The magazine is produced twice a year (June, December) in hard copy and made available online. At 2745 m Mawson Peak dominates Heard Island. The peak marks the summit of Big Ben, an active volcano covered in a thick mantle of snow and glacial ice and surrounded by black volcanic rocks. A smoke plume and fresh lava flowing down the Gotley Glacier are visible. Eric Woehler
