Environmental issues

The introduction of a certified Environmental Management System (EMS) was a catalyst for many changes at M4. At our cargo facility, we continually seek to improve our environmental polices and procedures, and have successfully passed EMS audits.

In addition to improving documentation of current procedures, a number of work practices have been updated to reflect changes in standards, requirements and the development of the AAD's environmental policy.

The cargo facility is now equipped to handle spills of hazardous substances, to prevent substances contaminating the marine environment of the port, and to effect safe and effective clean up procedures. We are now well equipped to control and reduce the shipping of contaminants to our stations.

Over the past two seasons, the quantity of contaminants being shipped with cargo has been greatly reduced through regular fumigation and diligent cleaning and checking of cargo items. Problem areas such as prepacked cargo, machinery, containers and gas bottles have been targeted and processes and packing improved accordingly.
