The aircraft used for intracontinental operations are ski-equipped CASA 212-400 (C-212) aircraft.

The C-212 aircraft is a twin engine turboprop, fixed undercarriage STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft with a rear cargo ramp/door.

Its configuration makes the C-212 suitable for general Antarctic operations, while the payload/range characteristics make it suitable for the long distances between our Antarctic stations.

A crew of 5 pilots and 3 engineers operate and maintain the C-212 aircraft which are owned and operated by contracted service providers Skytraders Pty Ltd.

C-212 specifications

  • ski-equipped twin turboprop, fixed undercarriage STOL aircraft with a rear cargo ramp/door
  • maximum speed – 150 knots (on skis)
  • maximum range (in normal configuration) – 1000 nautical miles
  • fuel capacity – 3000 litres (with underwing auxiliary tanks)
  • passengers – up to 15 expeditioners
  • capable of Hobart to Antarctica ferry flight
  • capable of flying directly from Casey to Davis or Davis to Mawson (without refuelling)

These intracontinental ski equipped aircraft will deploy directly from Hobart to Dumont D'urville to Casey, where facilities are available for refuelling and support.

C-212 aircraft documentation for expeditioners

All expeditioners will need to attend a pre-flight briefing and sign the Acknowledgement of Risk form, prior to flying aboard the C-212 aircraft within Antarctica.
