A large number of courses designed to prepare you to both work and live at stations or in the field. These are programmed prior to departure from Australia.

The program is planned and coordinated by the Expedition Training and Liaison Coordinator (ETLC), Support Centre.

Programme booklets will be available following commencement at the AAD. Attendance at each course is compulsory for all nominated expeditioners. Courses are usually conducted in Tasmania with a few interstate.

Travel and accommodation for these courses is provided by the AAD. Any questions relating to this programme should be directed firstly to the Station Leader or, in his/her absence, to ETLC.

Scientists

Scientists receive specific briefing in their particular disciplines, and in the use and maintenance of special scientific instruments. The supervisors of the science research programs currently organise training.

Expeditioners employed by organisations

Expeditioners employed by organisations (eg Bureau of Meteorology) will also undertake specialist training. Expeditioners from these organisations are also required to participate in many of the training courses organised by the AAD, and so should check the program booklet carefully and liaise with their Station Leader.

Specialist training

Specialised training may include courses on the use and handling of explosives, plumbing, electrical and mechanical maintenance survey techniques, industrial safety, and the operation of construction plant and equipment, such as cranes, forklifts and front end loaders.

A limited number of expeditioners from each station will be trained in anaesthetics and theatre nursing so that they can assist the station doctor at the station.

All long term expeditioners participate in basic fire fighting and a selected number of expeditioners will participate in fire team training, including breathing apparatus use. This training programme is designed to help expeditioners achieve a level of expertise and confidence to enable them to handle the tasks and responsibilities of being a member of a small community.
