Since our last update, we’ve been busy completing a range of operational work and training, with some really great results achieved.
Following our recent technical search and rescue training, we are now conducting training to commence sea ice operational work. This training has included sea ice rescue training, Hägglunds recovery training, and general safety training for conducting sea ice operations.
In addition to training, we continue to complete a broad range of operational work tasks around station including preventative maintenance, project work, and stocktakes.
One significant operational achievement over the last two weeks was the successful retrieval of the iconic Rumdoodle Field Hut from the Framnes Mountains. Despite the usual Mawson weather challenges, a combined team of six trades and mechanical expeditioners led by Glenn B, Tom D, and Chris G worked tirelessly over three days to safely return the hut to station for repairs. Our big challenge now is deciding what colour to paint it!
Just like you back home, we all voted in the Federal Election last week. Led by our Returning Officers Roelof and Leon, we felt quite privileged to cast our votes in one of the most picturesque voting locations on the planet!
In between our busy work and training schedule, we’re also enjoying a range of weekly social activities — whether it be the weekly Game of Thrones series saga, band practice, volleyball matches, or learning the fine art of whisky thanks to our resident expert Scottish.
Our operational focus now turns to planning and training for a sea ice traverse to Taylor Glacier in support of important seabird science work in late June.
