Preparations for Christmas

This week at Macquarie Island: 24 December 2010
Our preparations on station for the festive season are well advanced. The mess has been decorated for Christmas for some days now, people are busily preparing their “secret Santa” gifts, and there is stiff competition for the role of playing station Santa! So much so that several hopeful contenders for the role have bleached their beards to a snowy white (using fur seal flipper marking bleach ...which is actually ordinary hair bleach anyway!). Family and friends can be assured that it will be a very happy time for us, with all our people who are mostly working in the field to be back on station for a few days, but no doubt many missing loved ones at home.
