The beach in front of Davis is a favoured locality for elephant seals, where they complete moulting over several weeks before heading back to sea to feed and regain condition over the winter months.

Davis helped out with promotion of the Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea. Gathering table, chairs, cloth, doilies, cups, saucers and teapot we joined the last of the elephant seals still moulting along the high tide line.

Davis this week has gone from cold to colder, Wednesday's temperature hitting a low of minus 22C, enough to make your eyebrows and whiskers freeze as this young elephant seal confirms.

The helicopters and their crews did an enormous amount of work this summer including local and deep-field flying; assisting with the AMISOR project at the Amery Ice Shelf; installing teams at Law Base in the Larseman Hills, Hop Island and Sorsdall Glacier; flying regularly to and from Woop Whoop Skiway; and visiting the Indian, Chinese and Russian stations.

The dive team has worked extremely hard, heading out just after breaky and back in after dinner. Apart from a few bad starts due to unfortunate weather, most days have been a great success.

Davis, "The Riviera of the South", has had a very balmy summer, so it can come as a surprise when the more usual Antarctic weather sets in and hangs around for a while.

With winds consistently blowing around the 30 knot mark and gusting into the 50s, a weekend indoors was assured. Friday drinks, aptly titled "Bugs in the Bar" was hosted by the marine scientists and divers, who showed us many fascinating local sea critters.
