Giant petrels for all their size (they are the C130s of the Southern Ocean birds) are notoriously skittish and leave their nests and chicks quickly if disturbed. The colonies around Davis are believed to be right on the edge of their range so establishing cameras is a very non-invasive way of studying their habits and breeding success.

Heading out to popular Bandit`s Hut for a couple nights via "Iceberg Alley", we visited jade icebergs. The vibrant colours and distinct ripples and fractures throughout them are almost hypnotising, and we struggled to walk away from these amazing sights.

A question that isn't asked that often, but should be, is how do we keep our beautiful beach-bodies buffed over the long dark cold winter months, and prevent them from becoming beachball-esque.

It's hard to explain the anticipation of seeing the Sun after six weeks of darkness, and last Friday we saw our first signs of its smiling face. It arrived in earnest after about a week of theoretical sunrises blocked by a frustrating perpetual band of cloud on the northern horizon. Hooray!
