This week at Davis Station 29 August 2008
Greetings from Davis, another week full of fun and joy has passed us by, although we did manage to catch some of it.
Friday drinks are always a good social get together, and this week it was the Comms department who were generous enough to allow the rest of society into their domain for a few end of week beverages and good old Friday night fish and chips for dinner.

Ray and John were not available for the event due to being out in the field for hut maintenance, so the daily sched. was dutifully carried out by the nearest person to the radio, who just happened to be our very own D.J Wolfman Doc Lloyd.

Even with the stress involved with organising an event such as Friday drinks, the Comms team have still managed to soldier on with their own work programs. Jason has been busy getting the network cabling ready for TAD. While Andrew T has been terminating some fibre optic cable for the building monitoring and control system.

Monday was set as the date for our fire training exercise, but due to the weather gods not smiling on us with moderate winds and blowing snow for the better part of the day, it was decided training was to be postponed till further notice. Snow clearing of roads will be back on the agenda in the near future.

Harriet also has Monday pencilled in for her ice core sampling, but this too has been put off till weather conditions and busy work schedules can accommodate each other, the labs for her sampling are ready to go, all we need now is the sample itself.

The cool temps of late took their toll on the Met building with one of the air intake heating coils splitting, causing the plumbers to remove it in less than desirable conditions, and take it back to the workshop for examination and repairs.

Mark, as always is kept busy with maintenance of his atmospheric experiments and monitoring.

Pete has managed to finish his sleeping bag audit, and has moved on to the occupational health and safety audit, making sure our systems of safety at work are up to scratch.

With the number of people expected over summer to be relatively high, it has been decided to utilise a few spare room in the SMQ to make more bedrooms, so Kenny and Ray have been busy cutting holes in walls to put doors in the old library and back packers rooms, and fit power points and light switches, now giving us an extra two bedrooms.

Hydroponics is slowly winding down, with the annual stripping and cleaning of each tank taking place as crops are removed, leaving it ready for the next crew when they arrive in a few short months. We still have a healthy crop of lettuce, beans and tomatoes, so they will be kept for a little while longer.

Lloyd has had to use his skills this week also, we don't like to need his services, but it is nice to know they are there, fortunately it wasn't serious, just a filling for Scott.
