A time change at Casey and wildlife begins to return to station.

Times are a changin'

This week’s station news is brought to you by Zac.W

With just over three weeks till the first flight and the start of the summer season, it was time to change the station clock to match Kingston, Tasmania (head office).

It was decided by the people who decide such things that this would occur at the same time as when Tasmania changed their clocks, last Sunday morning. Unlike Tasmania, where people lost one hour of sleep, the time zone change here was three hours, moving from UTC+8 to UTC+11. We made up for the lost sleep by declaring Monday a public holiday which was one owing to us from many months ago.

However, after a late Saturday evening had by some on station, it was well after lunch on Sunday when some people got out of bed.

After work treat

Now that the equinox is behind us and with the time zone change we find that the sun is now setting around midnight for the first time since the end of summer eight months ago. What this means is going for a walk up to Reeves hill or Shirley Island after work is now possible. But it’s not just the sun which makes these walks popular, it’s the returning wildlife.

In the last few weeks a number of snow petrels have been seen flying around station and the seals have started to return at Shirley island and around Wilkes hut, however we still we have not seen any penguins which the whole station is anxiously awaiting. They should not be much longer.

Stay tuned.
