Public Summary
12 Science ANARE health register [observational] MED The ANARE Health Register(Australian Antarctic Health Register, AAHR), has been in operation since 1987. It gathers, stores, analyses and reports on all health related events occurring in the Australian Antarctic program. Results of medical consultations are coded confidentially(ICD-9) and analysed on both a monthly and an annual basis. In addition to serving as a long-term data base for epidemiological studies, the AAHR is a critical tool in the operation of the Polar Medicine Unit. The Register is a unique high fidelity long term epidemiological data base providing insight into the health of some of the most isolated populations on Earth.
13 Science Human interaction with the antarctic environment MED Personnel participating in Australia's Antarctic program live in total physical isolation in one of the harshest environments on Earth, for periods of up to nine months of the year. The research hopes to gain an understanding of the effects of the Antarctic environment on humans, with particular emphasis on studies that facilitate living and working in Antarctica. Collaboration between the Australian Antarctic Division's Polar Medicine Unit and national and international universities and agencies includes NASA and the use of Antarctica as an earth analogue for exploration class space travel.
3224 Science The role of sleep and circadian phase on crew safety, performance and psychological health during long-term analog space missions MED We aim to pilot test an integrated program to assess sleep, circadian phase, cognitive functioning, behavioural health, and safety in isolated and confined environments. We propose to test our program with personnel wintering over in Antarctica. The study will provide data necessary for the development of an integrated, comprehensive program to monitor and improve crew health, safety and psychology during long-duration missions.
