Everybody on an Antarctic station has a job, and many of these are operational positions. Each person has an important role to play in keeping the station running smoothly.

Everyone has additional responsibilities outside their primary role to support the station community.

Everyone participates in community duties. These are allocated by the station leader on a rotating roster. Jobs such as household cleaning, blizz line maintenance and waste removal (known as the ‘gash run') are done on Saturdays. Kitchen slushies work throughout the week.

As well as these general station duties, there are a number of additional station appointments. Some of these roles are decided well in advance as they require training or official selection processes, and others can be decided once on station. Some attract an allowance and others are volunteer positions.

Additional station appointments may include:

  • Deputy Station Leader
  • Amenities Officer
  • Electoral Officer
  • Environment Officer
  • Fire Chief
  • Flag Officer
  • Gym Manager
  • Hobby Hut Coordinator
  • Hydroponics Coordinator
