All Australia’s stations are equipped with small but comprehensive medical suites.

Medical facilities include:

  • consultation and examination room
  • small operating theatre and dental suite
  • well-stocked pharmacy
  • diagnostic laboratory.

In emergencies, expeditioners may need to assist the station medical practitioner. These expeditioners have done special training in Hobart to prepare them as lay surgical assistants.

AAD Polar Medicine staff, and a network of medical specialists around Australia, are on call to provide medical advice if needed.
