      Poultry products

Do not take any poultry or egg products including freeze dried rations or egg powders into the field This is to prevent the possible transmission of any poultry diseases to birds and penguins

      Polystyrene and packaging

Polystyrene accidentally kills birds, as adults feed it to their chicks. Check all your gear (especially camera and computer gear) and remove all packaging and beads.

Do not use recycled cartons that have previously contained food such as fruit, as the they could harbour insect eggs.

Personal luggage may be transferred from the ship to shore by zodiac or amphibious LARC. Ensure your luggage is at least spray proof to prevent water damage.

      Accidental discovery

If you accidentally find exotic seeds, exotic insects and/or polystyrene to Antarctica, it needs special attention. Report it to the station leader.

      • Polystyrene will need to be packed securely for return to Australia
      • Insects and seeds will need to be killed or sterilised. They may need to be preserved for return to Australia and identification
