Training in Hobart
Depending on the particular expeditioner's requirement for training, anything between two and twelve weeks may be spent in Hobart undergoing specialist training.
This training will involve mandatory courses in fire-fighting and first aid, plus additional courses pertaining to the professional skills or trade of the expeditioner. Station and field training will be undertaken by expeditioners embarking on wintering or long-term summering trips.
This too may be a difficult time for loved ones, and expeditioners must ensure that they maintain regular contact with home. Loved ones may see this as being a 'good time for you', whereas they may feel abandoned, faced with the anxiety and pressure of getting on with their life without you. This time is often very difficult - the expeditioner has left home but has not embarked on Antarctic service. It has been described as being in a 'limbo' state.
