Medical records and the ANARE health register

Information on all medical consultations that occur on expeditions (including voyages) is currently stored in a computerised database, the ANARE Health Register. All health events attended by Antarctic medical practitioners are recorded in the Confidential Polar Medical Unit medical record system.

In line with contemporary medical practice, an electronic health record system has been implemented. Significant health events may be reviewed at time of reapplying for participation in the AAp, however evaluation on their impact on fitness will be made by the history and examination at the time of medical examination.

Access to medical information is restricted to medically qualified investigators and research associates responsible for them.Research based on this information will not be published in any form that permits identification of individual subjects.

This research has been approved by the AAD Human Research Ethics Committee, complies with the National Health and Medical Research Council Guidelines for Epidemiological Research, and has been declared to the Privacy Commissioner.
