Limitations in medical care

Medical care is generally provided by a single station and/or ship's doctor. The station doctor is working solo as a rule, and medical facilities and medical care are necessarily limited.
Evacuations are not routine for personnel with non-life threatening injuries or illnesses. Due to the remoteness and harsh environment of
our stations, winter evacuation is generally not possible.During the summer shipping and aviation seasons, changes may be made to AAD transport schedules, or aid may be enlisted from other nations, to accomplish the evacuation of a patient with a life-threatening condition.
On station, you will be required to see the doctor once a month for a simple health check and certain physiological measurements such as blood pressure and weight. These visits are a public health measure to ensure your continued good health.
Wintering expeditioners have blood samples taken at the end of summer for repeat blood donor screening tests and their general fitness for the ensuing winter is confirmed by the station doctor. There is also a mid-winter medical check-up to ensure continued good health.Again, as a public health measure, you will be required to attend these examinations.
