Medical research may be carried out by the doctor during the year.

If involved in any programs, you may be asked to give blood, saliva, or urine samples, participate in special diets, or be subject to other measurements.

Before departure, the medical research program will be fully explained to you by the doctor before you are asked to sign a form of consent.

Human research requires approval by the AAD Human Research Ethics Committee prior to commencement.

Current research questions

Antarctica is an extreme environment for humans, and those wintering there are subject to significant physiological disturbance.Research covers immune function, microbiology, photobiology, nutrition, psychology and behavioural adaptation epidemiology and occupational health, much of which is of potential value for health care on long duration space flights.

Current research focuses around issues such as:

  • What changes occur to humans in Antarctica?
  • How do they adapt to the Antarctic environment?
  • How can such knowledge improve the well-being of Antarctic expeditioners as well as aid the planning of human activities in other isolated, confined and extreme environments?
