Antarctic medical practitioners receive two weeks training in emergency dental care. There are no specialist dentists available on ships or stations.

Long-term (over-wintering) expeditioners must be certified as dentally fit within three months of the southbound journey.Sponsors or employing organisations usually meet the costs associated with dental examination and provision of the certificate but individuals must meet costs of any dental treatment.

Summering and short-term expeditioners face the same dental problems as do long-term expeditioners. Many of these dental problems are unique to the extreme Antarctic environment.

Whether you are a summering or a wintering expeditioner, we recommend that you have a thorough dental examination and any necessary treatment prior to departure.
