Base camp tents are generally larger style fabric shelters that are not suitable for carrying by people on small expeditions. They are more suited for transport by sleds or aircraft.
With a floor size of between 12' x8' up to 12'x24' base camp shelters provide larger and more comfortable living and work areas for expeditions, and pack up into relatively small packages for transport. Many of the base camp shelters used are sourced from international suppliers who have developed products for the northern hemisphere, and modified the designs for use in Antarctica.
Base camp tents have been used by the AAD in a number of projects including regular use in the AMISOR ice drilling project on the Amery Ice Shelf. They were also used during the PCMEGA program in 2002. A number of other national polar programs and private operators also use base camp tents.
