There are three operating areas recognized for field trip approval.

Station limits

Station limits comprise the station and immediate visible surrounds. Station limits for each station are described in the AAD Field Manual. Generally approval is not required for activity within station limits, but in conditions such as blizzards, all approvals may be withdrawn.

Station operating area

Station operating areas (incorporating station recreational limits) include the commonly visited travel routes and field huts in the region surrounding each station but exclude glaciated or hazardous terrain.

At Mawson this takes in the FramnesMountains, at Davis the Vestfold Hills and at Casey local travel routes. Details are outlined in the AAD Field Manual. SL approval is required.

Remote area

The definition of 'remote area' includes hazardous terrain adjacent to the station operating area and ALL other areas. Field trips to remote areas require approval from AAD Kingston.
