Be careful about presents you send to your expeditioners – they must not include plants, seeds or soil and should not be packed in polystyrene or similar packaging as wildlife may mistake it for food. The import of plants, seed and soil into Antarctica is prohibited under the Madrid Protocol.

Examples of inappropriate presents include:

  • small heat packs that contain wheat seeds
  • lavender bags
  • greeting cards made with dried flowers or embedded with seeds
  • herb growing and seed sprouting kits
