If you have specialist trade skills you could be one of several general trades people we recruit to assist in the construction of capital works projects. As the general tradesperson you will support electricians, carpenters, plumbers and plant operators in carrying out their work.

The number of positions varies from year to year as do the particular skills required. They may include riggers, painters, tilers, welders, refrigeration mechanics, plasterers, boilermakers, etc.

All our general trades people must possess a trade certificate or licences, and the type will vary according to the requirements of the particular projects for which we are recruiting.

What will you actually do on the job?

  • Assist in the construction of new facilities as well as the operation and maintenance of the existing station buildings and building services.
  • Assist with science programs when necessary.

Your tasks will vary depending on the works program for the year.

As well as these specific job roles you will also be required to perform station duties rostered by the station leader to support community life, such as general kitchen duties, garbage clearance, water duties, and assisting other expedition members with official programs. You may volunteer for other duties such as firefighting, hydroponics and boating.
