The Australian Antarctic Division has a central role in naming features in the Australian Antarctic Territory and Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. Antarctic place names support navigation, research and operations, and reflect Australia's long-standing presence and history in Antarctica.

Antarctic Gazetteer

The Australian Antarctic Gazetteer provides information on all official Australian Antarctic place names. This site enables users to search, interogate and download place name infromation for the Australian Antarctic Territory and Australia's sub-Antarctic Islands.

The SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica contains a collection of all Antarctic place names contributed by 29 countries.

Australian Antarctic Place Names Committee

The Australian Antarctic Division has a long history in assigning place names in the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. This work began with the first Antarctic Names Committee, established by Douglas Mawson and Phillip Law in 1952.

Proposals for new place names are considered by the Australian Antarctic Division's Place Names Committee. Final approval of place names rests with the Head of the Australian Antarctic Division.

The Australian Antarctic Place Names Policy PDF and the Australian Antarctic Place Names Committee Terms of Reference PDF explain how Antarctic place names are assessed and the role of the Place Names Committee.

Place name proposals

Anyone may submit a place name proposal.

New place names should seek to reflect Australia's long Antarctic history, but also reflect our changing culture, with a focus on inclusion. Before submitting, we recommend reviewing the Australian Antarctic Place Names Policy PDF to help guide your proposal.

Proposals for new place names can be submitted using the place name proposal form.

Enquiries and requests for additional information should be directed to placenames@aad.gov.au.
