Annual base salary
(while in Australia)FTO $72,590 pa ($2,783 per fortnight before tax)
SFTO $80,165 PA ($3,074 per fortnight before tax)
In addition whilst working in Antarctica allowances of $54,460 pa are payable.
As a Field Training Officer (FTO) you are responsible for the planning, scheduling and delivery of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic field training. You will lead and provide support to scientific and operational groups working in the field. Field safety and the development of station search and rescue capabilities are also an important part of the role.
The Senior Field Training Officer (SFTO) role is often filled by an experienced returning FTO. However, any candidate with suitable skills and experience may apply for the position. As the SFTO you will be responsible for supervising station FTOs, coordinating training schedules and providing a high level of leadership to expeditioners. The SFTO is part of the station management team.
The FTO role is generally a summer position, however, there are opportunities to winter over. The employment period may range from 3 to 15 months.
The role involves:
· Conducting pre-departure, shipboard, sub-Antarctic and Antarctic field training;
· Developing and delivering training programs across a wide range of sub-Antarctic and Antarctic field skills;
· Providing leadership and planning assistance to field programs;
· Conducting and coordinating station search and rescue training;
· Maintaining, issuing, and auditing field equipment;
· Maintaining travel routes and gps waypoint information; and
· Providing outdoor recreational opportunities for expeditioners.
You will ideally have Antarctic or cold climate field training experience, organisational ability and leadership experience in supporting field expeditions, instructional ability in a wide range of field skills remote area or higher level of first aid certificate, and instructor qualifications in rock climbing or single rope techniques.
The typical employment period for Field Training Officers is approximately 7 months.
Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.
Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 15.4% will be paid in addition to salary and allowances.
