Working as a Plumber in Antarctica

Annual base salary (while in Australia)

$58,396 pa ($2,238 per fortnight before tax)

In addition whilst working in Antarctica allowances of $52,632 pa are payable.

As the Mechanical Services/Sanitary Plumber your role involves installation, operation and maintenance of building mechanical services plant and equipment including all internal/external reticulated pipe work.

Other areas of responsibility include:

  • the air handling plant including ventilation and exhaust systems
  • sewerage treatment plant and associated pumping equipment
  • high temperature incineration plant
  • kitchen equipment
  • all LPG installations including field huts
  • water production plant including melt bell management
  • medical gases and sterilization equipment.

Please note: training on oil fired boilers, LPG, water production, waste treatment, plant operation, water and air balancing is provided to long term expeditioners.

Additionally you'll prepare monthly reports and assist in science programs when necessary.

You'll have a suitable trade or technical certificate in the building trade group. Additional courses and/or training in the industry are an advantage.

If you don't meet all these requirements don't be discouraged. In making final selections we take into account overall team building and the mix of skills required.

The typical employment period for Plumbers varies between approximately 6 to 15 months.

Recreation Leave - You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days for each full year worked. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica.

Superannuation - A generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 15.4% will be paid in addition to salary and allowances.
