Station Communications Technical Officer

The Australian Antarctic Division is now accepting applications for job opportunities supporting the 2018–19 Australian Antarctic Program.

Overview of the role

As a Station Communications Technical Officer (COMMTECH) you will carry out routine and complex telecommunications maintenance and repair tasks and operate communications equipment. You may be required to carry out, or assist with, the installation of complex telecommunications systems.

The COMMTECH is normally only employed in a winter job. On occasion, summer or short winter positions may be available. COMMTECHs are employed at all three Antarctic Stations as well as at Macquarie Island.

Employment conditions

Salary and allowances

The annual base salary (while in Australia) is $85,907 per annum ($3,293 per fortnight before tax).

Additional allowances totalling $59,186 per annum are payable while working in Antarctica.


A generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 15.4% will be paid in addition to salary and allowances.

Recreation leave

You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days per annum pro rata. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica, but will be paid out on return to Australia.
