The Australian Antarctic Division is now accepting applications for job opportunities supporting the 2018–19 Australian Antarctic Program.

Overview of the role

As the LIDAR Scientist you will be required to provide operational support to the Atmospheric Group of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) Climate Processes and Change (CPC) Program. Your primary duty will be to operate, maintain and calibrate an atmospheric LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system at Davis Station, Antarctica for a period up to approximately 18 months duration (up to 15 months in Antarctica). This work will primarily support research that is focussed on Antarctic tropospheric clouds and their representation in climate models. You will also undertake routine reporting on the operation of the LIDAR, and will be involved in analysis and interpretation of data. There may be a role in on-site supervision of one or more postgraduate students associated with LIDAR operations.

Employment conditions

Salary and allowances

The annual base salary (while in Australia) is $81,769 per annum ($3,135 per fortnight before tax).

Additional allowances totalling $56,335 per annum are payable while working in Antarctica.

Superannuation

A generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 15.4% will be paid in addition to salary and allowances.

Recreation leave

You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days per annum pro rata. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica, but will be paid out on return to Australia.
