Antarctica is the last great wilderness. The vast continent – nearly twice the size of Australia – and its surrounding seas, are shaped by cold and wind, ice and snow.

This land of extremes is brought to life in a new publication One Place Many Stories: Antarctica, published by the Australian Antarctic Division in 2011, as part of the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities’ Our Australia series.

The book describes the physical environment and wildlife of Antarctica and the subantarctic, the ‘heroic’ and modern era of Australia’s exploration of the continent, Australia’s environmental protection and conservation activities, scientific research, and the importance of artists and others in telling the stories of Antarctica. It is illustrated by some of Australia’s best Antarctic photographers.

The book is the third in the Our Australia series, behind West Kimberly and Oceans.

One Place Many Stories: Antarctica can be ordered online through the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities’ website or you can download an electronic copy [4.9 Mb PDF] or Word document.
