Place names
Although many features in the Vestfold Hills are named after early ANARE expeditioners, many of the major features bear Norwegian and Russian names from the Klarius Mikkelsen expedition of 1935, the Lars Christensen expedition of 1936-37 and the Soviet Antarctic Expedition of 1956.
The Norwegians mainly charted the coastal fringe of the Vestfold Hills but also named a few inland features on the basis of aerial photography carried out by the Christensen Expedition. The Soviets explored more widely and charted many of the larger lakes and islands just a year before Davis Station was established by ANARE.
This compilation principally covers the Vestfold Hills and some major features surrounding it. But both the Norwegians and the Soviets also left their mark on the maps of the Rauer Islands and Larsemann Hills.
