Judith Clarke has spent five extended summer seasons in Antarctica as a penguin biologist monitoring populations of Adélie penguins. During this time she was isolated in field camps and forced by circumstances to live and work under very difficult physical and environmental conditions. Judith remained dedicated to the research program and on a personal basis proved an inspiration to her subordinates and colleagues alike.

As a result of her outstanding work at Mawson she was sent to the Italian station of Terra Nova Bay to initiate a cooperative research program with Italy at Edmonson Point. Judith’s research has made an important contribution to Antarctic biological research and has been recorded in a series of 11 publications to date.
